There are now new CDC rules in place for those who travel abroad with their dog; the new rules take effect Aug. 1, 2024. All dogs coming into the U.S. from other countries must be at least 6 months old and micro-chipped to help prevent the spread of rabies. The new rules also require vaccination for dogs that have been in countries where rabies is common. The update applies to dogs brought in by breeders or rescue groups as well as pets traveling with their U.S. owners. The rules apply whether you are a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. resident, or foreign national. If one elects to not follow CDC’s rules, their dog won’t be allowed to enter the United States; if denied entry, the person’s dog will be sent back to the last country of departure at the person’s own expense.
