A Call with Consequences

A week after ringing in the New Year, a Seattle man was arrested and booked into jail after he admitted to stabbing his brother to death in a home in the Fremont area of North Seattle. The man called SPD saying he killed his sibling. Based on this call, the Seattle police descended onto the scene and in fact discovered the man’s brother was inside the home – dead.

Sadly, these are the type of brutal incidents that cause domestic violence calls to be taken very seriously. This includes calls for pushing, shoving and even yelling. Officers, prosecutors and judges alike tend to error on the side of caution when dealing with domestic violence related cases. Officers, prosecutors and judges don’t want to be the one that didn’t take a domestic violence related call seriously enough. They don’t want the onslaught of the eventual media fall out for not taking action when they could have. In short, these are the types of endings that cause the court to issue no contact orders even when the alleged victim doesn’t want one, or the prosecutor to file charges even when the alleged victim asks or demands them not to prosecute. This is why officers, by law, have to arrest someone in a domestic violence related call when they come into contact with the parties within a four hour period after the call is received. So, hereby be forewarned – any call made to 911 that is related to an alleged physical incident (of any type – touch, punch, slap, pinch, push, shove and even poke) between loved ones, will most assuredly result in an arrest and criminal charges being filed, whether or not the parties involved want such an outcome.
