Although Seattle Municipal Court was one of the last courts in Western Washington to go virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has taken the lead in essentially eliminating in-person hearings on all criminal and civil infraction matters moving forward. That is a big shift in how SMC does business in less than a month.
Most courts are handling their virtual hearings through the Zoom platform. Seattle, however, elected to use the WebEx platform reflecting upon the fact that it felt it was more secure than other virtual platforms. Getting the WebEx up and running was certainly slow-going and it created a lot of frustration for attorneys and defendants alike. Now that WebEx is in-service, however, it has been an excellent platform for virtual hearings. It is very user friendly. The Seattle Municipal Court should be lauded for taking the step of going all virtual during these challenging times. Yes, it is a big step, but a step that is necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the both the staff and patrons of the court. Nice work SMC!
