It is official, the Seattle City Council, under extreme pressure, passed an ordinance to close certain city streets when criminal activity is afoot. Previous to this, Seattle was only permitted to close alleys to entry or travel. Under the ordinance, to close city streets, there has to be a recommendation from the police chief based on the fact that the closure is necessary in order to prevent criminal activity occurring in, or emanating from, the identified street. This new ordinance is in response to massive issues on Aurora, involving violent and/or otherwise dangerous crime. Prior to this, fed up residents took matters into their own hands and put barricades up against city code. They also staged a protest march. Their actions worked to get city leaders to ‘take action’ by passing the ordinance. Concrete barriers are now in place on North 96th, 98th 100th and 102nd streets off Aurora.
