King County jail restrictions are now lifted. As a direct consequence, the Seattle police can now again book people into King County jail for lower-level offenses, such as criminal trespass, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, malicious mischief, theft 3, property destruction and the like. For the past four years, the Seattle Police were not permitted to book folks into jail for minor crimes. Now officers have the discretion to determine if someone is a threat to public safety if they are arrested for lower-level criminal acts. The thought is that this return to discretionary bookings will encourage a higher level of accountability. Time will tell what the impact of ‘more arrests’ will have on public safety and defendant accountability.
