Earlier this year the Seattle Police Department (“SPD”) began phasing out its old uncomfortable handcuffs with ones that were … well … simply put, more comfortable. They are more comfortable because they are more egronomical.
As of the end of January, every Seattle patrol officer/ ‘beat cop’ has been provided the new model of handcuffs; but it should be noted that officers carry two or three sets of handcuffs at a time, so they likely still have the old model too.
The new handcuffs are matte black instead of shiny silver; they are aluminum instead of steel, but they have the same strength. Despite being metal, the new aluminum handcuffs, aren’t cold or sharp like their steel counterparts. They are smooth, they are rounded, and thus they don’t dig into your arms and wrists.
Seattle Police Officers have the option of a chain or a hinge model of the new cuffs, the only difference being how well hands can twist or turn while in them. Hinged handcuffs cost $55 per unit; regular chain handcuffs cost $50. The department ordered a mix of both varieties, starting with 500 for the first order. So although no one ever desires to have a set of handcuffs placed on them, at least those who do will experience at bit more comfort than in years past … at least in Seattle.
