Police accountability remains a very hot topic in-and-around the state and the country. One accountability method being pushed is body-worn cameras. However, one significant issue being raised is the costs of the devices. Many counties and municipalities simply can’t afford them.
The Redmond City Council is weighing that very issue, as it ponders whether to outfit their officers with bodycams. As for the Federal government, the Justice Department just announced that its law enforcement agents will be required to wear body cameras when making planned arrests or serving search warrants. The directive was issued by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco to the: (1) FBI, (2) US Marshals Office, (3) DEA and (4) Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearms & Explosives. Each agency must develop a specific body-worn camera policy within the next 30 days. Speaking from experience, the camera footage from body cameras really does give a great ‘birds eye view’ of an officer’s interaction with the public. Bring on more cameras!
