On July 26, 2012, Mukilteo police arrested Snohomish County Council Chair Brian Sullivan for driving under the influence. Mr. Sullivan allegedly had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
Councilman Sullivan is currently running in the August primary election for a one-month term in the 1st Congressional District seat Jay Inslee previously vacated to run for governor. According to a news release issued by Washington State Democrats, Sullivan has been a Snohomish County Council member since 2008 for the 2nd Council District. He served as a state representative from 2001 to 2007 for the 21st Legislative District and as mayor of Mukilteo from 1990-1997.
Last Thursday’s arrest occurred after law enforcement caught up with Sullivan west of Highway 525 on Chennault Beach Road after another driver called to report that he was “all over the road,”. Sullivan had pulled over and stopped in front of a business. An officer allegedly smelled alcohol on Sullivan’s breath, and Sullivan apparently performed poorly on field sobriety tests. After the field sobriety tests, the officer arrested Sullivan and took him to the police department, where two breath tests indicated blood-alcohol levels of .168 and .161 percent, according to a department release. As is well known, the legal alcohol limit in Washington is .08 percent.
