Drugs, as is well known by now, are a bit out of control in Seattle. To deal with the problematic issue, Seattle may try an alternative court path, other than mainstream court. Those arrested in Seattle for drugs will be diverted away from the prospect of jail. Efforts will be geared to more effectively use ‘stay out’ zones, and curb street-based drug markets. The hope is to whittle down cases to no more than 60 days in the legal system, using alternative housing and treatment. This new policy on drugs, replaces the community court system that was shelved approximately two years ago. Those who qualify will be offered a set of conditions to avoid jail time – such as urine testing, social services and the aforementioned stay out of drug zones in-and-around the city. If the conditions are complied with over a period of time, the city would agree to drop the charges the person faces. Time will tell if this new alternative to combat drugs will work. If one were to have a crystal ball, one would probably divine that based on prior results in the City’s effort to ward off drugs in-and-around Seattle, the program is not likely to be successful.
