Get vaccinated or lose their job – that was the decision many members of the Washington State Patrol (‘WSP‘) had to make. Well, as of a week ago 127 WSP employees had separated – in one format or another – from their positions with WSP. Of those employees, 67 were troopers. The question is, was it worth it? By not being vaccinated the troopers were not only putting themselves and their families at risk, but they were also putting citizens at risk. Obviously, that was not a tenable position. After all they are employed to protect the public, not harm it. For these 127 WSP employees, the multitude of law suits, and exemption requests to avoid vaccination failed.
It is yet to be seen how this staff reduction is going to impact the efficacy of the WSP, as the brass scurry to move resources and people around to fill the voids left by these employment separations. As for the troopers, the WSP is vigorously recruiting to fill three new academy classes in the coming months. Until replenished, will people feel emboldened to drive ‘carefree’? Time will tell, as we shall see how our roadways are ultimately impacted by this lesser law enforcement presence.
