Federal funding for crime victims has been put in jeopardy by President Trump’s administration, and Washington along with 19 other states is none too pleased. In response to the administration’s actions, the states sued the federal government. The suit seeks to release more than one billion dollars intended to go to survivors of violent crime pursuant to the Victims of Crime Act, signed into law in 1984. In Washington alone more than $34 million is at risk for fiscal year 2025. Pursuant to the administration’s acts, funding will be cut if a state impedes or otherwise hinders the enforcement of our country’s immigration laws, i.e. declining to provide federal enforcement agencies’ access to government buildings. It will be interesting to see how the judge(s) rule on the recently filed suit.
