Twenty-three folks were recently arrested over a battle involving issues of free speech. A christian rally held at Cal Anderson Park on Capital Hill (which was permitted by the City of Seattle) angered a good number of LGBTQ+ supporters to the point that a physical aggression occurred on multiple fronts. Now the federal government is investigating allegations of targeted violence against religious groups. After many rejected locations by the city, Cal Anderson Park was curiously suggested by the Seattle Special Events Office.; now Seattle’s mayor, Bruce Harrell, is wanting the city’s permitting processes reviewed. It is well known that a government’s ability to regulate free speech in any park is extremely restricted. That, however, doesn’t keep at bay the concerns of the local constituents. And therein lies the rub — how to balance the interests of all. In this instance, it appears the city of Seattle failed in any attempt to balance interests, and as a consequence a number of people are now facing criminal charges as a result, unfortunately. Should we be shocked? Knowing Seattle and its governmental bodies, sadly, probably not.
