A Homeowners Association (HOA) in Federal Way, Washington got creative in its attempt to stop crime in its neighborhood. Cars that come and go from the HOA neighborhood will now be recorded by cameras that can use artificial intelligence (AI) to read license plates. This idea isn’t going to solve all the neighborhood problems, of course, but it’s part of an overall strategy to deter crime in the neighborhood, which apparently has been on the rise, greatly frustrating homeowners. The neighborhood agreed to a “partnership action plan” with the city of Federal Way. Obviously, there is a tradeoff, however – privacy vs. security, but most folks welcome the trade-off because it impacts everybody, not just certain folks, and no one is desirous of becoming a victim. Some are concerned, however, that the technology does create comprehensive records of everybody’s comings and goings … but it is worth it for some peace of mind. Be forewarned, at least in one Washington neighborhood, big brother is definitely watching.
