Prostitution is – as we all know – rampant on the Aurora Avenue North corridor of Seattle. In an effort to stem the issue, the city of Seattle has embarked on a new strategy to deter people from soliciting prostitutes in that area. The new strategy — sending warning letters to the registered owners of vehicles Seattle detectives observe engaging with sex workers. The letters are not criminal charges and do not carry any penalty. The purpose of the John letters is to serve as a warning to persons engaged in suspected perceived sexual exploitation. The focus of this initiative is not necessarily to solve trafficking, it’s to add another tool to slow sexual exploitation of sex workers. Since January, Seattle police have made 18 arrests for sexual exploitation along Aurora Avenue. Will the John Letters work to assist in curbing sexual exploitation? Time will tell.
