Watch out Seattle – police cameras could soon be in more neighborhoods; the big eye in the sky will be watching you. Next month a proposal will be before the Seattle City Council requesting that the Seattle Police Department be permitted to expand its use of surveillance cameras with the goal of tracking suspects and collecting evidence. Surveillance cameras are seen by some as a “force multiplier” that will help officers become more efficient at fighting crime in-and-around the city. The counter argument, of course, is that the cameras implicate privacy concerns.
Gun violence around Garfield High and on Capitol Hill have prompted public safety concerns. Thus, it is hoped cameras in these areas will tamp out and reduce crime. The full City Council will weigh in on the expansion of cameras into more Seattle neighborhoods next month. Stay tuned on that front.
