DUI’s don’t just happen when someone is pulled over by a police officer. Case in point – on March 21, 2019, a suspected drunken driver crashed into a pulled-over patrol car in Bremerton, Washington; apparently first responders had to dive for safety during the event, but luckily there were no serious injuries.

The incident happened after police had been called out on a report of a possible inebriated driver. The driver was located and stopped but as it turns out, she was determined to be only experiencing a medical issue. While on scene, however, the officer had his emergency lights activated, and was positioned diagonally behind the woman’s car so as to shield the vehicle from oncoming traffic. Fire & Rescue and Olympic Ambulance were also summoned to the scene, and were preparing to tend to the elderly woman with the medical issue. It was at this point that a speeding Honda careened into the parked patrol car, moving it 15 feet and pinning a gurney between the patrol car and the medically challenged woman’s car. Miraculously, the Bremerton firefighters narrowly avoided being hit but another member of the party was not so lucky and was hit by the aforementioned gurney and almost pinned between it and the woman’s car. The attendant was not seriously injured but as a precaution was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Shockingly, the driver of the Honda allegedly had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit of .08. Such a level of alcohol would impair anyone, but the good news of this story is that no one was seriously injured. These are the types of stories, however, that cause a heightened sense of government crackdown on the social moral crime of DUI.
