Will Washington follow California’s lead in creating a digital driver’s license? Currently California has implemented a pilot program where 1.5 million authorized residents can download a CA DMV (Washington is DOL) Wallet app. There are many locations – such as the Los Angeles International Airport – that now accept mobile/ digital driver’s licenses. Since things are still in the testing phase, government agencies, i.e. law enforcement, are not accepting the mobile licensing application. Thus, it is advised that the test pool still carry their physical license while the test period is in effect.
It will be interesting to see how far digital licensing goes because many car insurance cards are now digital, but folks often can’t download their insurance verification in a timely manner and officers end up citing the person for failing to have insurance, which is an infraction. Although insurance infractions of this type can ultimately be dismissed (on proof to the court the person has insurance coverage), the cited person still ends up having to pay the court a minimum of $25.
