Later this month Bellevue will be running its own community court (‘CC’), which will handle matters in the Bellevue Library system, not the courthouse. The CC will handle minor crimes and hopes to resolve issues by helping people, not putting them in jail. The CC will handle cases involving non-violent misdemeanors, like theft. Instead of jail, the CC will require counseling, treatment and community service as part of any case resolution. The hope is to prevent future crime and address the underlying issue that gave rise to the unlawful act perpetrated. The CC is funded by King County Mental Illness and Drug Dependency Sales Tax, and will have a community-based resource center open to the public in the Bellevue Library system. If successful, participants in CC will ultimately have their case(s) dismissed.
