Seattle Camera Controversy

In the city of Seattle, you are being watched - whether you like it or not. Seattle’s Crime Center has access to hundreds of cameras, even more than previously thought. The total number of cameras equals a whopping 427, with an additional 893 privately owned cameras that are registered with the Crime Center. These additional cameras allow officers to request video footage when responding to 911 calls or during expanded investigations. Many of the cameras are located outside downtown’s high crime areas - Chinatown International District and Aurora Avenue North. Some folks are not comfortable with officers having so much access to their movements in-and-around Seattle, while others want the added protection that they feel the cameras provide. Authorities have recommended that the police department and city leaders adopt policies and procedures for accessing privately owned cameras for police work. The Seattle police have capitulated to this and they plan on proposing polices and procedures by March 15, 2027. There is little doubt that the proposals and procedures will not include elimination of the cameras. So again, just be aware, if you are in Seattle, your movements and actions may be on view; you are on the proverbial candid camera.
