Effective September 1, 2026, the Seattle Police Department will cease to offer hiring incentives to qualified officer candidates. The reason? The City budget. Currently, active officer levels are still below 2021 employment numbers. The Seattle Police Department currently has 927 deployable officers, excluding those on disability or extended leave. Interestingly, the budget allows for 1,184 full-time positions. The department has apparently lost roughly 700 officers since 2020. Clearly, Seattle is having a problem getting and retaining police officers. So, what does the city do? It cuts a viable incentive package to encourage qualified officers to work for the City of Seattle. The optics aren’t good, obviously. Seattle citizens complain about crime in the city, especially on or near Aurora Avenue. It only makes sense that in order to ensure safety within the city limits of Seattle, the city needs an adequate number of qualified police officers. Clearly, the City counsel and the mayor don’t see it that way. The mayor, in fact, continues to mandate that cameras are not on in and around the City. In short, crime prevention isn’t at the top of her list of action items in running the city.
