No Cookie Cutter DUI's

DUI’s come in all shapes and sizes and at all times of the day or night, and can happen to just about anyone. DUI’s are not a ‘one size fits all’ type of scenario. DUI’s don’t have to involve ‘bad people’ as a prerequisite, and they don’t have to only be done by someone with a drinking and or drugging problem. A DUI doesn’t even have to be done intentionally or with any level of knowledge. This is so because DUI’s, essentially, are deemed a ‘social more’ crime. That is to say, DUI’s are simply considered a crime because they are based upon fixed, [un]written customs and moral standards that govern acceptable behavior within our society. All this said, some DUI’s can definitely be worse than others. One such situation happened this past week when a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper’s vehicle was hit on Interstate 5. The incident happened in the northbound lanes at South 272nd Street in Federal Way around 2 a.m. The trooper was providing traffic control for a crash in the HOV lane with the cruiser's emergency lights fully activated and engaged when a car traveling in the HOV lane did not move over and hit the trooper’s patrol vehicle. Thankfully, the trooper was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision. However, the patrol SUV was, as to be expected, badly damaged from the impact and had to be towed from the scene. Upon further investigation, the driver of the offending car was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. This person now will face criminal charges in a King County court and, if convicted, will be facing jail time, a fine, a license revocation (or suspension), probation and the real prospect of having to obtain both an ignition interlock device and high risk (SR22) insurance.
