Last month it was announced that a King Count program that provides youth an alternative path to prosecution for felonious criminal activity was paused. The program allowed both victims of an alleged crime and the accused to engage in services and support. However, the government wanted further evaluation to, in essence, determine the program’s effectiveness and use; the program has been beset by concerns regarding its use of funds and lack of oversight. The program titled ‘Restorative Community Pathways’ began in 2021. The concern is that the program simply isn’t reducing recidivism; goals are not being met. To date, King County has spent nearly $20 million on the program. The question, obviously, is whether further funding is appropriate, should monies be spent elsewhere? Hopefully, the ‘further evaluation’ will answer this pressing question. Stay tuned on that front.
