Police surveillance shall expand in Seattle pursuant to a recent city council vote. The council endorsed two measures that add surveillance cameras to three neighborhoods, expands SPD’s real time crime center, and incorporates a slew of DOT cameras in-and-around the city of Seattle. The measures were pushed to tamp down crime prior to the FIFA World Cup games coming to town. Of interesting note, SPD’s Real Time Crime Center, and its use of surveillance, is a pilot program, which was funded last year. It isn’t working full time quite yet, but the council is hoping to expand it to full time. Proponents argue this surveillance is necessary for controlling crime, while opponents of the program say it is too invasive of our rights to privacy. Clearly, the Seattle City Council is the former, not the latter.
