What does that Punched Hole Mean?

A Washington State driver cited for DUI is virtually guaranteed to have his Washington State driver’s license punched. What he might not know, however, is that this “hole” doesn’t invalidate his driving privilege. In Washington State a driver’s license is still valid for at least 60 days from the date of a DUI or Physical Control arrest. That said, however, the license is considered a valid temporary driver’s license that should be carried on the person along with the bottom portion of the form given to the driver by the citing officer entitled the “Department of Licensing (DOL) Hearing Request”. If the person follows the form’s instructions exactly, and timely requests a DOL Hearing within twenty (20) days of his arrest, the valid temporary license will be extended until the driver receives written notice from DOL to the contrary. The cost for a DOL hearing has recently been increased from $200 to $375, and if a person chooses to not request a DOL hearing, he can still possibly be permitted to drive but will need to apply and obtain an Ignition Interlock License from DOL.
