VAWA to Lapse

Word is out that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) will not be extended by Congress, and will thus lapse for the first time in 25 years. The lapse is a direct result of not being included in a two week stopgap government spending bill.  The VAWA supported victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. It authorized funding for social service agencies that aided victims affected by sexual violence, including, but not limited to, funding for shelters, rape crisis centers, and legal support opportunities.  In the past there have been reauthorizations of VAWA, but this time it appears the Republicans and Democrats could not get on the same page on the terms of a reauthorization, thus the lapse.  Time will tell how this will impact domestic violence events/ incidents in the future.
