A Seattle Ordinance in the Works

As has been widely noted over the past few weeks and months, the City of Seattle is looking at ways to promote safer gun storage. This comes amid continued concerns over rampant and – as some perceive – escalating gun violence.

In its effort, and pursuant to Seattle Municipal Code Chapter 10.79 and acting under the authority of Seattle Municipal Code Chapter 3.02, the City of Seattle has proposed the following: A resident must maintain a safe, gun safe, gun case, gun cabinet, or lock box that is: (a) designed to fully contain firearms and prevent removal of, and access to, enclosed firearms; (b) capable of repeated use; (c) capable of being opened only by a numerical combination consisting of the entry of at least three variables entered in a specific sequence on a keypad, dial or tumbler device; key, magnetic key, or electronic key; or by biometric identification; and (d) constructed with such quality of workmanship and material that it may not be easily pried open, removed, or otherwise defeated by the use of common tools.

Of course, as with all proposed City Ordinances, there is a public comment period. In this case, all interested persons have been invited to comment on the City’s proposed gun storage rule no later than 4:30 p.m. on October 15, 2018. Comments are encouraged to be in writing, and may be emailed, mailed, or delivered to the Legal Unit of the Seattle Police Department; voicemail comments should be left at 206-386-1320.
